Skipjack Plans Corrections
Apr 15 2009, 10:11 AM EDT
I have been working to digitize the Skipjack plans for the SIMBC and will be printing these out soon for everyone to review, but I wanted to open this forum first to provide everyone a chance to let me know about any corrections to the plans that have been talked about in the past and I may not have heard about since I am such a new member. Some of the items that I have corrected on the plans are as a result of discussions within these forums already such as the angle on the transom block, and some I discovered as I was attempting to "digitally" assemble the parts into a scale drawing of the model such as the angle on the longhead. Since my CAD program allows me to assemble various drawings into a completed whole, I have also been able to assemble all of the drawings into a "scaled" representation of the model, so we no loner have to say "Not to Scale" on Page 1. The larger model displayed will be 1/2" to 1", and the smaller model is 1/4" to 1" I expect to complete the plans very soon and will bring a full size printout to one of the next meetings. All I have left to complete is the sectionals for the keel. Since I purchased an additional keel I intend to take some measurements off of the actual keel and compare to the original plans before completing that portion of the drawing. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. I have a high tech hs785hb winch servo, double pulley with continuous loop arrangement. I need some help where to place the servo, how to run the line, what type of line to use, where to exit the deck, and where to attach both lines to main and jib booms. Any help is greatly appreciated.Thank you, John (Johnnycat) 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I am using the same winch arrangement and have modeled mine after what Al Suydam suggested. If you send me an email at mike_hoffman atsign verizon.net. I will send you a couple pdf that shows where my items are located. I also have a few images that show the arrangement as well.

I just wanted to drop an update here for the members. I have completed the digitization of the Skipjack plans and have gotten a friend to print out a full size copy that I will be bringing to the club for review and corrections. In addition to the normal 4 sheets, I have also created a 5th sheet that shows a top view of the boat with the hatches, bowsprit, sheet exits and mast location all identified. We have also digitized the building instructions, embedding the pictures with the various steps to help future builders visualize the steps. Once the reviews are complete and the changes have been incorporated, I think the intent is to post the building instructions on this website for easy access. I want to incorporate more information on the various rigs, and boom vangs that people have used on their boats. Please send me your pictures and any construction details and I will work to put these into a rigging document. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I plan on building a Skipjack this winter. I've been waiting to obtain plans until your updates and corrections are completed. The last post was May 29. Have you now completed digitizing the plans? Can I receive the plans digitized on CD rather than in printed form as I have a friend with AutoCad I can use.? Thx Scott 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I would not wait for the digitized plans as they still have to be reviewed by the club members and approved for dissemination. I have gotten permission to send out a pdf of page 5 that I have assembled which shows the top view of the boat, and the layout for the sail winch configuration to anyone that purchases plans, but this is the only page I can send. I am also still waiting for a member to provide me with pictures of a sail arm configuration so that I can draw this one up as well. While I have finished the initial work, there is still much more work to complete before these can be released to the general public. As for the differences between these plans and the current plans being sold, it's not that there are major differences, just some clarifications and the inclusion of the sail winch layout diagrams. I also added some more "full size" parts, but as long as you pay attention to the scale markings on the original plans you will be fine. For example, on the original plans the bowsprit is not drawn to scale, but on the digitized plans it is. Either one is easy to build by and neither is any more accurate than the other. The only major item missing from the original plans is the location of the rudder servo and we can send you pictures and drawings that will describe that item. As a side note, for the digitized plans we have one additional item to resolve and that is the printing of the plans. The program that I am using when printing the long arcs of the Skipjack straightened out some of the arcs and we find this unacceptable, so we are not quite there, but getting close. If I have to change CAD programs, this could delay us even more, but we need quality print outs if we are going to move forward. My recommendation is to purchase the existing plans and video and watch this forum for updates or contact any of the members (myself included) if you have any questions during the build of your boat. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. I am currently using TurboCAD and am not happy with the resolution of the images during printout. I am hoping to acquire a copy of AutoCAD so that I can convert the drawings to AutoCAD format as I am sure it will do much better with the printing.
