I have been working to digitize the Skipjack plans for the SIMBC and will be printing these out soon for everyone to review, but I wanted to open this forum first to provide everyone a chance to let me know about any corrections to the plans that have been talked about in the past and I may not have heard about since I am such a new member. Some of the items that I have corrected on the plans are as a result of discussions within these forums already such as the angle on the transom block, and some I discovered as I was attempting to "digitally" assemble the parts into a scale drawing of the model such as the angle on the longhead.
Since my CAD program allows me to assemble various drawings into a completed whole, I have also been able to assemble all of the drawings into a "scaled" representation of the model, so we no loner have to say "Not to Scale" on Page 1. The larger model displayed will be 1/2" to 1", and the smaller model is 1/4" to 1" I expect to complete the plans very soon and will bring a full size printout to one of the next meetings. All I have left to complete is the sectionals for the keel. Since I purchased an additional keel I intend to take some measurements off of the actual keel and compare to the original plans before completing that portion of the drawing.

I have been through a number of plans trying to figure out the sheet leads. The sheet seems to begin at the servo arm, run aft then thru the deck and terminate in a ring. The jib sheet seems to begin at the ring and run down the deck and thru an eye under the jib boom. The main seems to also begin at the ring, but seems to go thru an eye near the rail, thru an eye on the boom then down to the other rail. Is this correct? It seems that the jib would sheet in more closely than the main with this configuration and backwind the main.

Hello everybody! I've been looking over the site, I've had the privilege of sailing with some of the members and the opportunity to build 5 hulls, 4 of which sail but are now in the ownership of others. However, I was looking for and unable to find the "published" standards for construction and operation. For example, minimum weight, maximums or minimums for length with bowsprit or without, beam, dimensions / shape for the keel (I mean, would a long, deep keel like that of a US One Meter be allowable? ), type of sail rings (wooden, metal), shape, dimensions or even type of sailcloth allowable etcetera, etcetera. I realize this is nit-picky in a sense but I honestly don't know what the "true" standards are or where they are on the site. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

Hello,
I am the Fitness Coordinator at Mercy Ridge Retirement in Timonium, MD and for about a year now we have been looking for a club that was into model boats. Our residents would love to see them in action and we are wondering if anyone would be interested in bringing their model boats to Mercy Ridge (we have a pool, but we do not know about your boats and if they can be exposed to chlorine or not) or to a lake nearby where we can bring our residents to see them. The population here is very independent and some of them sail to this day. Does your club do anything like this? Please let me know if you are interested and thanks so much, ~Caley

Dear Mike
I received an email from Alan Suydam about your skipjack photos, but can't find the ones I need. I'm hoping you can help. I have a high tech hs785hb winch servo, double pulley with continuous loop arrangement. I need some help where to place the servo, how to run the line, what type of line to use, where to exit the deck, and where to attach both lines to main and jib booms. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, John Herschberger

Greetings fellow skippers. I would like to sell my skipjack. It was built according to the SIMBC plans and specs. I used the SIMBC keel, frames and sails and this boat handles great. It would be just the thing if someone needed a boat for the upcoming National Regatta or the monthly skipjack series. Unfortunately living here in Florida makes that impractical for me and there are no other skippers with this model nearby. Anyway, it comes with a Spektrum DX-5 radio system, Hitec 311 servo for the rudder and a Hitec 765 for the winch. All you, he new owner, will need do is raise the mast, set the sails and just "add water". I love building these boats and am looking forward to begin building another one (#6) as soon as this one sells. I'd post a couple of construction photos but I haven't figured out how to do it on this site yet. Please feel free to contact me directly only if you're sincerely interested: thehobbyshop.titusville@yahoo.com Thanks in advance.

After purchasing light weight cloth a yard at a time, I made a search for another supplier and found these folks :
http://www.fiberglasssupply.com/Product_Catalog/Reinforcements/Glass_Fabrics/glass_fabrics.html Scroll down the page to Industrial Fabrics and you can even buy a 250 yard roll if you need that much. Here is another supplier that carries both .58 oz and .75 oz: http://thayercraft.com/ Ron

Having been bitten by the RG65 bug, I downloaded plans for the Palo de Agua. My question is directed to Al, or anyone else building this boat. I have reviewed the plans and have found patterns for the shadows, frames and bottom plank, but none for the sides. Have I missed something, or do you have to spile these other planks?
Thanks, Rob Dutton

I recently had a discussion with the SIMBC group during the last monthly meeting, and thought I would relay what we discussed.
For the rudder servo, a standard size high torque servo is recommended. The rudder servo is located in the wheelhouse at the stern of the vessel and its wiring passes through a hole in the deck inside of the wheelhouse. For controlling the sails, I have been shown 2 arrangements so far. There is the Dumas Sail control that uses a servo to control the power/direction of a motor powered gear reduction unit that moves a large sail control arm. The other option is a sail winch. These sail winches are generally about twice the size of a standard servo and they are set up with a continuous loop arrangement that shuttles the sail control back and forth. This is the arrangement I chose for my boat, and though she has not seen the water yet, the pulley system seems to be very easy to set up and adjust.

I was getting ready to cut the bevel on the transom block today and I noticed that the plan labels the angle as 70 degrees, but it is acutally drawn as 65 degrees. I was wondering if someone could tell me what the correct angle of the transom in relation to the building board should be.

I am about at the stage where I need to start painting my Skipjack, and I was wondering if members of the group love or hate specific paints? I have been debating using the Brightsides Polyurethane by Interlux. I have used this before on "Full Size" boats and been pleased with both the finish and durability, but have never really used it on a model. I had even thought about the 2-part polyurethanes, but thought this might be overkill for a boat that will be inside a good portion of it's life.
For the deck on my boat I have chosen a product called "Clear Coat" from the "Woodcraft" store. It is a 2-part clear coat. I intend to test this and the mahogany grain filler on a scrap of the plywood before attempting the deck finish.

I was looking at the plans for the JIF2. Can someone tell me what planking size works best for this hull? I am assuming since it is a rounded hull that it would be balsa planked? I was hoping to make it to the Jan meeting to ask questions, but got sick and ended up in bed instead.

I purchased the Proctor Turnbuckles for my Skipjack and was left with the dilemma of how to fasten them to the chainplates. After several iterations of quick connects I discovered that the holes in the turnbuckles are the perfect size to be tapped for an 0-80 thread. I purchased an 0-80 tap, and 100 brass 0-80 screws from McMaster Carr. If anyone wants to go this route, let me know, I have plenty of screws left, and am more than willing to loan out the tap and give away some screws. Just be real careful with the tap, it is VERY small and fragile.

I have been debating trying to build a "Universal" boat building board. Here is what I am thinking so far. I was thinking of using the INCRA T-Tracks from Woodcraft. I would either have 2 or 3 tracks mounted about 4-6 inches apart, then build clamps that would be perpendicular to the table surface so that you could position the clamps at the frame locations and then lock them down. For the skipjack build, the clamps could be as simple as 3/4" pine or oak with 1/4" holes drilled in them for the T-Track bolts and nuts. The tracks would give you infinite adjustments for most boats. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions as I pursue this. Also any pictures of building boards would be appreciated as it may help me to understand the different frame mountings.

I am looking at building the JIF65, and I have not been able to find in the plans what material they use for the "bumper". Are they just using a balsa block for the bumper? Also, since these are relatively small and lightweight boats has anyone ever thought of using a lighter weight balsa for the hull and covering the boats in monokote? It would give a nice finish, and if the edges are sealed well would be durable and waterproof. You could even use the translucent colors on the deck and be able to see the inards of the boat.
