What are the RG-65 Remote Control Sailboats? Select "RG65 Brief History" to your left and you will be provided some historical insight on these wonderful little homemade boats. This subject surfaced with absolutely perfect timing. Your officers were feverishly seeking Winter project ideas that might spark some interest. Focus was directed to the "Footy" sailboat and was going to be a suggestion to pursue for Winter activity. In September Al Suydam and Butch Garren raced in the Vintage Nationals in Spring Lake, NJ when Earl Boebert suggested that we review the RG-65 as a possible alternative to the "Footys". His key statement was that the Footys looked liked little rubber duckies. Al & Butch looked at each other and agreed that would not be satisfactory. Earl kindly presented Al with a CD that had a bunch of plans for RG-65s. Upon arrival back to Maryland the CD was investigated by Al and Butch pursued the subject on the Internet. After much dialog back and forth between the two, it was decided that the RG-65 needed to be presented to the club. Al has already completed the Palo de Agua while Butch is building the JIF. The subject was broached at the November 8, 2008 meeting and there was an unexpected amount of interest. More will be written on this subject. Meanwhile make tab selections to your left for additional information. Update: We now have a bunch of RG65s in the planning or progress stage: http://simbc.wetpaint.com/page/RG+65+Build+Status

I have been through a number of plans trying to figure out the sheet leads. The sheet seems to begin at the servo arm, run aft then thru the deck and terminate in a ring. The jib sheet seems to begin at the ring and run down the deck and thru an eye under the jib boom. The main seems to also begin at the ring, but seems to go thru an eye near the rail, thru an eye on the boom then down to the other rail. Is this correct? It seems that the jib would sheet in more closely than the main with this configuration and backwind the main.

I am looking at building the JIF65, and I have not been able to find in the plans what material they use for the "bumper". Are they just using a balsa block for the bumper? Also, since these are relatively small and lightweight boats has anyone ever thought of using a lighter weight balsa for the hull and covering the boats in monokote? It would give a nice finish, and if the edges are sealed well would be durable and waterproof. You could even use the translucent colors on the deck and be able to see the inards of the boat.
